Beeston Hall is a thriving co-educational boarding and day school, set in idyllic surroundings, 600 metres from the North Norfolk coast, backed by 700 acres of National Trust forest. Underpinned by the core values of purpose, resilience and empathy, the school is genuinely true to its motto of ‘floreat fiducia’: let confidence flourish.
Curriculum. Boys and girls are taught together in small classes, with all being prepared for Common Entrance and scholarship examinations. Over the last decade, an average of over 60% of leavers have won scholarships or awards to their senior schools. Destinations in the last five years have been: Ampleforth, Bedales, Eton, Downe House, Framlingham, Gresham’s, Gordonstoun, Harrow, Oundle, Norwich School, Norwich High School for Girls, Radley, Repton, Rugby, Shrewsbury, Stowe, Tudor Hall, Uppingham and Wycombe Abbey.
The June 2024 ISI reports describes: ‘Robust academic assessments and effective teaching support pupils’ good progress, including for pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The plentiful open spaces in the school grounds and the nearby coastline offer pupils a chance to be spiritually reflective and to find quiet and peacefulness in their busy, everyday educational experiences.’
Activities and co-curricular. In addition to the usual examinable subjects, Art, Music, DT, Computing, PHSEE, Reasoning, Forest School (to Year 5) and Theatre Studies are all timetabled. Activities provide children with a wealth of opportunities to suit all tastes: currently including astronomy, basketball, board games, Boom club, chess, cooking, cross-stitch, film club, foot volley, Lego club, metal-detecting, Rock club, roller-skating, SCUBA, shooting, skiing and street dance, alongside extra sports clubs.
SEND and EAL. Support for children's learning runs as a golden thread through everything we do at Beeston, with inclusivity firmly at its core. We are holistic in our approach, assessing, planning and responding to academic, physical, social and emotional needs which are swiftly identified and appropriately supported in line with the SEND Code of Practice. The SENDCO has a reputation for facilitating outstanding pupil outcomes for our children who present with a wide range of learning profiles and is in the process of seeking to secure CReSTeD status for the school. Qualified EAL staff prepare overseas pupils for Cambridge First Certificate (B2 or C1), delivering 100% success rate, with a minimum of 90 minutes per week dedicated to them.
Music and Drama. As well as the annual Beeston Fringe Festival, every child takes part in at least one drama production each year, with an emphasis on developing confidence through participation and presentation. Four choirs and 12 music groups meet each week and over 80% of the pupils learn a musical instrument. One-to-one LAMDA lessons are increasingly popular, with 78% of pupils winning distinctions over the last two years.
Sport. The school is equally proud of its record on the sports field, where all children are coached, regardless of ability, by a dedicated team of staff, and are given the opportunity to represent the school. Hockey is very strong, with both boys’ and girls’ teams regularly reaching IAPS regional and national stages, and a biennial trip to Barcelona. Cricket is too, with the 2023 cohort of boys’ county champions for 3 years running and national finalists in the 2021 and 2023 ESCA competitions. The U11 girls won the inaugural county cricket championship last year. In addition to the usual major sports (rugby still the priority over football for boys), children compete in cross-country, athletics, golf, shooting, swimming, tennis, surfing and sailing.
Recent developments. A new dance studio, and a dedicated recording studio are part of a major Music School redevelopment to be complete in mid-2026. While smartphones are not allowed, all children from Year 5 upwards have their own Chromebooks. Weekly Enrichment classes give specific focus on pre-test familiarisation and touch-typing skills. Year 8 pupils have embarked on the Learn to Lead course, helping to ensure emotional intelligence complements their cognitive abilities and emphasising the importance of relationship-building and collaboration. A Nursery is opening in September 2026.
Pastoral care. The recent ISI report explains: ‘Pupils accept responsibility. This guides them in their behaviour around school and in their interactions with each other. Pupils are happy and feel safe at school. They build self-confidence in an atmosphere of mutual support and collaboration.’
The scale, and strength, of the pastoral care system ensures that every child is closely watched over and cared for. Daily updates are circulated to staff on the welfare and progress of children and a Senior Mental Health Lead coordinates sessions with an independent counsellor for children who may need support.
Entry requirements. Entry is via a Headmaster’s interview, a taster day and provision of the previous year’s reports from the prior setting, as necessary. Means-tested scholarships are available for Year 3 entry.
Religious denomination. Mainly Church of England; 15% Roman Catholic.
Charitable status. Beeston Hall School joined the newly formed Radley Schools Group in September 2025, (company reg no. RC000611 and charity no. 309243). It exists to provide preparatory education for boarding and day boys and girls.
