This independent day school, founded in 1876, attracts girls from both the immediate neighbourhood and all over the West Midlands. They come for the academic curriculum, the lively programme of sporting, creative and cultural activities, and for the individual attention and flexibility of approach. The school is renowned for its unique and distinctive programme of pastoral care and places considerable importance on wellbeing.
Personal relationships at EHS are of paramount importance. Parents, both individually and through their association, give their time generously to support our activities; while staff, through their hard work and good relationship with the girls, create an orderly and friendly atmosphere.
Organisation and curriculum. There are three departments working together on one site which caters for over 850 day girls aged two and a half to 18. One of the features of EHS is the continuity of education it offers. However, girls can be admitted at most stages. Staff take special care to help girls settle quickly and easily. Pupils enjoy a broadly based programme which substantially fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum and much more.
The Pre-Preparatory Department, consisting of Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception, offers facilities to girls aged two and a half to five in a spacious, purpose-built, detached house. The staff aim to create an environment in which they can promote every aspect of a girl’s development.
The Preparatory School accommodates over 350 girls from 5+ to 11 in up-to-date facilities, among them a new IT suite, Science Laboratory, Library and Design Technology Centre. A full curriculum, including English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, is taught throughout the department.
The Senior School and Sixth Form caters for about 500 girls aged 11+ to 18. Girls follow a well-balanced curriculum which prepares them for a wide range of subjects at GCSE and A level.
Examination results are very good with high grades distributed across both Arts and Science subjects. The vast majority of girls in Year 13 proceed to Higher Education. Every year girls obtain places at Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities.
Co-curricular activities. Girls can take part in a broad range of activities including art, ceramics, Mandarin, drama, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, music, sport and Young Enterprise. There are clubs during the lunch hour and after school. Instrumental music lessons are available. There is a strong music tradition in the school. Girls go on visits, expeditions and work experience in this country and abroad. We encourage girls to think of the needs of others.
Accommodation. There is a regular programme of improvements to the buildings. A multipurpose hall, The Octagon (for whole-school use incl. Prep), has recently undergone a refurbishment including new seating and various technical upgrades. Within the 14-acre site, there is a heated indoor swimming pool, a large gym, a fitness suite for all ability levels, an all-weather floodlit Astroturf surface for hockey, netball and tennis, an athletics track and a cricket square. The outdoor facilities also include a variety of playing fields, a sports pavilion and the school allotment.
In 2018, a multipurpose building, the Hexagon, was completed as well as a refurbishment to the Sports Pavilion. In September 2022, the Sixth Form Centre benefitted from a full refurbishment, creating a new and inspiring setting that successfully bridges the gap between Sixth Form study and university life.
Location. The school is pleasantly situated next to the Botanical Gardens in a residential area, 1½ miles south-west of the city centre. It is easily accessible by public transport and also has its own privately run coaches.
Fees per term (2024-2025). Nursery and Kindergarten: £3,638 (5 days); Prep: £3,750–£5,269; Senior: £5,580; Sixth Form: £5,670.
Scholarships and bursaries. Academic Scholarships are available at 11+, awarded on the basis of performance in the entrance examination. Sixth Form Subject Scholarships are awarded based on examination and interview.
Two Music Scholarships are also offered annually: one at 11+ and one at 16+. 11+ candidates must sit the main entrance examination in October and then have written, aural and practical tests. Candidates at 16+ attend an audition and interview in January.
At 16+ there are further subject scholarships awarded to girls of outstanding ability. Assessments take place in January.
A Bursary fund exists to help girls of good academic ability in financial need to enter at Reception, Year 3, 11+ and the Sixth Form and to assist those whose financial circumstances have changed since they entered the School. Bursaries may cover part or full fees. All scholarships can be combined with means-tested bursaries in cases of need.
