Founded in 1876 and celebrating 150 years of education, Edgbaston High School for Girls (EHS) is one of the region’s leading independent day schools. Throughout its history, the school has been known for a pioneering spirit, and today it continues to promote its ethos of being Fearlessly Female, encouraging girls to be ambitious, confident and ready to shape their futures without limits.
The school attracts pupils from across the West Midlands and beyond. Families value its strong academic curriculum, broad programme of co-curricular opportunities, and the distinctive pastoral care that places wellbeing at the centre of school life. With over 850 girls on one site, EHS offers continuity of education from age 2 to 18, supported by close personal relationships and a warm community atmosphere.
Structure. The school is divided into three departments:
•Pre-Prep (Nursery to Year 2): Nursery and Kindergarten are based in a purpose-built, detached house with a sensory room and outdoor learning area. Reception, now located alongside Years 1 and 2, benefits from a dedicated outdoor section created specifically for early learning.
•Preparatory School (Years 3–6): Prep pupils enjoy specialist facilities including an IT suite, Science Laboratory, Library and Design Technology Centre. The school prepares girls for their next steps, whether into the Senior School or grammar, and enrichment is offered through initiatives such as Ignite.
•Senior School and Sixth Form: Around 500 girls follow a broad curriculum, achieving consistently strong results at GCSE and A-level. A wide range of enrichment programmes – including Girls with Goals, Cognito, Academic Advocacy and Futures – add further value to classroom learning. The modern Sixth Form Centre provides a vibrant and aspirational space that bridges the gap between school and university.
Curriculum. The curriculum at EHS is both ambitious and innovative, designed to give every girl the knowledge and skills to succeed while nurturing her individual talents and aspirations. It substantially fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum but offers far more breadth and depth.
At GCSE and A-level, pupils can choose from an extensive range of subjects spanning the Sciences, Humanities, Arts and Languages. This breadth ensures that students can tailor their studies to reflect their own strengths and interests, whether aspiring to careers in medicine, law, engineering, the creative industries or sports science.
The curriculum is continually evolving to reflect the modern world, blending traditional academic rigour with opportunities for exploration and independent thought. With dedicated academic support through initiatives such as Cognito, Girls with Goals and Academic Advocacy, each girl is guided towards achieving her full potential and developing the confidence to take her next steps.
Co-curricular Opportunities. The co-curricular programme is carefully designed to provide both balance and breadth. Pupils can choose from activities ranging from sport, drama and music to Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Young Enterprise, Mandarin and ceramics. Some activities support academic study, while others simply provide fun and relaxation. A strong music tradition continues to thrive, alongside a busy schedule of trips, expeditions and charitable initiatives.
Facilities. Set within 14 acres beside Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens, the campus offers excellent facilities. The Octagon, seating 600, provides a state-of-the-art venue for assemblies, concerts and whole-school events. Sport is well served with a swimming pool, large gym, fitness suite, floodlit Astroturf pitches, athletics track, cricket square and extensive playing fields. The Hexagon adds further flexibility for learning and performance.
Fees per term (2025-2026). Nursery and Kindergarten: £3,638 (based on full time, no funding); Pre-Prep & Prep: £3,638–£5,263; Senior: £5,580; Sixth Form: £5,670. Fees exclude VAT.
Scholarships and bursaries. Academic Scholarships are available at 11+, awarded on the basis of performance in the entrance examination. Sixth Form Subject Scholarships are awarded based on examination and interview.
Two Music Scholarships are also offered annually: one at 11+ and one at 16+. 11+ candidates must sit the main entrance examination in October and then have written, aural and practical tests. Candidates at 16+ attend an audition and interview in January.
At 16+ there are further subject scholarships awarded to girls of outstanding ability. Assessments take place in January.
A Bursary fund exists to help girls of good academic ability in financial need to enter at Reception, Year 3, 11+ and the Sixth Form and to assist those whose financial circumstances have changed since they entered the School. Bursaries may cover part or full fees. All scholarships can be combined with means-tested bursaries in cases of need.
