James Allen’s Junior School is an independent day school for girls aged between 4 and 11, offering a high quality of education provided by a team of skilled, motivated and dedicated teachers and support staff. The curriculum is broad and well balanced, and is enriched by a varied and stimulating programme of extracurricular clubs and activities.
Warmth, happiness and vitality are at the heart of everything we do at the Junior School. Children are encouraged to work to the best of their abilities, but we also want them to have fun and be curious in their learning. We see the primary years as vital to the success of all children’s education.
The Junior School has an excellent staff-to-pupil ratio and provides specialist teachers in Art, DT, ICT, Music, PE and Science from Year 3. In French the children are taught from 4 years of age using the immersion method. Prep School girls enjoy specialist teaching for most of their subjects while regularly being taught by their Form Teacher. Our specially designed Computing suite, along with the Science, Design Technology and Art rooms, enable girls to enjoy their learning in a practical as well as a theoretical way. Enriching our exciting and diverse curriculum is an extensive range of extracurricular activities to develop and extend the girls’ own interests, teamwork and leadership skills.
From the moment pupils begin their JAGS journey, the school equips them with a ‘toolkit’ for success, both now and in the future.
This philosophy is crystallised through the Bee Brilliant Pastoral Programme; six key values pupils embody in order to:
Be Inclusive
Be Kind
Be Respectful
Be Resilient
Be Brave
Be Unique.
Stretching far beyond the realms of the classroom, this programme is brought to life through all that pupils do, providing everyone with the opportunity to understand, develop and embed each value, as well as enabling them to use them to guide and support daily decision-making.
The Pre-Prep School (for pupils aged 4–7) is housed in a separate Edwardian building with a large outside green space, including a sensory garden, new library and Forest Schools activities. The Prep School (for pupils aged 7–11) is a large, modern building on the same site as the Senior School sharing their theatre, swimming pool and games fields. The contemporary Vaughan Williams Auditorium offers an exceptional musical performance and event space for the school and local community.
Pupils normally enter the school in the year in which they are 4 or 7 at the beginning of the Autumn Term. Assessments take place the preceding December and January. At 11, girls normally progress to JAGS where Prep girls regularly win scholarships.
Charitable status. James Allen’s Girls’ School is a Registered Charity, number 1124853. The purpose of the charity is the conduct at Dulwich of a day school in which there shall be provided a practical, liberal and religious education for girls.
