Part of Oundle School, Laxton Junior School (LJS) is an independent day school for children aged 4 to 11. The school prides itself on offering a nurturing, ambitious and progressive education of the highest standard, where every child is recognised and celebrated as an individual within a caring community. Each pupil is given the best possible start to a lifelong journey of learning.
The teaching staff take time to truly understand every child – what motivates and excites them – and use this insight to challenge pupils appropriately in every lesson and activity. A child-centred approach to staffing ensures that pupils receive the individual attention they need, building confidence and resilience while empowering them to embrace challenges, take risks and develop a genuine love of learning. Children are encouraged not to fear failure, but to learn from it, leading to real mastery of their subjects.
In 2024, LJS introduced a reimagined curriculum framework built around three interconnected stages: Explore, Discover and Empower. This journey takes children from exploration and discovery in Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 3) through to empowered, subject-specialist learning in Prep (Years 4 to 6). From Year 4, pupils are taught by Subject Specialist Teachers, reflecting the senior school model and easing the transition to the next stage of education. The entire curriculum is underpinned by the school’s Golden Thread of Nurture, ensuring that wellbeing and happiness remain central to every aspect of school life.
Outdoor learning is also embedded into daily life. The school’s bespoke Woodland Garden is a unique and inspiring space where children explore nature, learn practical outdoor skills such as fire-making and den-building, and bring the wider curriculum to life in fresh and creative ways.
Five core values – care, a love of learning, opportunity, community, and quality – sit at the heart of an LJS education. These values guide everything the school does, equipping pupils with the skills to thrive both academically and personally. While LJS is rightly proud of its excellent academic results, with most pupils progressing to Oundle School, it takes even greater pride in nurturing curious, open-minded, kind-hearted and well-rounded young people
