Lockers Park is a day and boarding school nestled in 23 acres of Hertfordshire woodland, with boys from St Albans, Harpenden, Berkhamsted, Tring and the surrounding villages. The school is located near to excellent road and rail links serving London and the Home Counties, as well as being in close proximity to London airports including Heathrow and Luton, making us a popular choice for weekly and full boarding.
Lockers Park has its own particular magic. Being purposefully small it allows the boys to achieve excellent results and develop an enthusiasm for life. Lockers Park boys move on to the country’s leading senior schools, with many achieving scholarships and exhibitions. While the school pursues a programme of Academic excellence, the Arts, Music, Sport and Co-Curricular success are also celebrated.
The happiness and wellbeing of the boys is at the heart of Lockers Park. Teachers know each pupil not only by name but by personality and learning style. Simply put, Lockers Park know what makes each boy tick. The family-like community, which actively encourages and involves parents, gives the school a special, caring feel built on a well-established framework of respect. ‘Safeguarding is robust, with well-trained staff and rigorous systems.’ – ISI
The school’s heritage and experience is rooted in providing an education for boys for over 150 years. The structure and educational content of the school day is tailored to help develop boys academically, socially and behaviourally. Lessons are deliberately designed so that they are interactive, practical and varied. The timetable is created with frequent breaks and plenty of outdoor activities built into the day which enables the boys to return to classrooms having expended healthy energy and allowing heightened concentration when they attend academic lessons.
Small class sizes (an average of 13 with a pupil to staff ratio of 8:1) and a staff of experienced teachers expect and encourage the best from every pupil, providing all the support and encouragement that growing boys need. The school’s recent ISI inspection concluded that: ‘Pupils make consistently good progress and achieve strongly across all subjects.’
A rich palette of opportunities is accessible to all at Lockers Park. Whether it’s Sport, Science & Technology, Music, Art, Drama, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts or Chess and Debating, there really is something for everyone. Pupils are encouraged to try new things, to take on personal challenges and learn from their experiences. The school believes that trying out something new can help pupils to apply themselves, as well as developing teamwork skills and an appreciation of working towards goals. This inclusive attitude also means every boy is given the opportunity to represent the school termly in sports fixtures throughout their Lockers Park career. The ISI inspectorate observed: ‘Teaching is purposeful and pupils are highly engaged, self-motivated and enthusiastic.’
At Lockers Park there are day boys, weekly boarders, flexi-boarders and full boarders, as well as many families who make the most of the school’s popular inclusive wraparound care programme. The flexibility the school offers is indispensable for many parents; approximately half of pupils board and many day boys also stay for activities and prep in the late afternoons and evenings. Wraparound care for Prep School pupils runs from 7.30 am–7.30 pm, including a cooked breakfast and supper. This exclusive feature is included within the termly fees and can be accessed on an ad-hoc basis with no need to pre-book. The recent ISI inspection: ‘Boarding was judged outstanding, creating a supportive and homely environment.’
