Established in 1884 (Brockhurst) & 1995 (Marlston House), Brockhurst & Marlston House is situated in 500 acres of its own grounds in countryside of outstanding beauty, only four miles from access to the M4. Boys and girls are taught separately, but the two schools join together for Years 7 and 8. In this way, Brockhurst and Marlston House combine the best features of the single-sex and co-educational systems: academic excellence and social interaction. The schools are proud of the high standard of pastoral care established within a family atmosphere. (See also entry for Brockhurst School.)
The Pre-Prep School, Ridge House, is a co-educational department of Brockhurst and Marlston House Schools for children aged 2–6 years, and is situated on the same site in new, self-contained, purpose-designed accommodation. Our Pre-Prep also includes a 51-week-a-year Nursery.
The children are prepared for entry to a variety of leading Independent Senior Schools through the ISEB Common Entrance and Scholarship Papers at 11+ and 13+.
All girls play netball (outdoor and indoor courts) and hockey. The boys play rugby and football. They both play tennis (outdoor and indoor courts), cricket and take part in athletics, cross-country and swimming (25-metre indoor heated pool). Additional activities include riding (own equestrian centre), fencing, judo, shooting, dance and ballet. Facilities for gymnastics and other sporting activities are provided in a purpose-built Sports Hall. Year 7 pupils make a week-long visit to a château in France as part of their French studies.
Music and Art are important features of the curriculum and a number of pupils have won scholarships and awards to senior schools in these subjects recently. The school has a dedicated Music School and professionally designed Theatre.
Transport is provided by the school to and from airports and between Newbury and Paddington stations. Pupils are accompanied by school staff to their destinations.
