New College School was founded in 1379 when William of Wykeham made provision for the education of 16 Choristers to sing daily services in New College Chapel. Situated in the heart of the city, a few minutes’ walk from the College, the school is fortunate in having the use of New College playing fields for sport and New College Chapel for school services.
The staff consists of some 22 full-time teachers and a full complement of visiting music teachers. In their final year, all boys complete the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate, while there is also a separate academic scholarship form and pupils are prepared for their destination schools’ entrance exams when applicable. The school broadly follows the national curriculum subjects, but also teaches French, Latin, Design Technology and Greek.
Sports, played on New College Sports Ground, include soccer, hockey, cricket, rounders, athletics and rugby. Activities include archery, art, craft, pottery, design, chess, sport, computing, drama, and science clubs. There is a Choral Society for parents.
Music plays a major part in school life with orchestra, ensembles, concert and junior choirs and form concerts, in addition to individual tuition in a wide range of instruments. An optional Saturday morning music education programme is followed by boys from Year 5 upwards.
Boys are admitted by gentle assessment to the Pre-Prep Department at 4 years and to the Prep School at 7 years. Potential Choristers are tested between the ages of 6 and 7 at annual voice trials.
