Terrington Hall is a vibrant and purposeful co-educational day, weekly and flexi-boarding school situated in the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 15 miles north of York.
We blend forward thinking learning with a traditional prep school ethos to develop kind, confident and well-mannered children who have the courage to take calculated risks without fear of failure and the resilience to pursue their talents and interests.
Every day is aimed at expanding our children’s horizons through a journey of discovery which makes learning fun and lights a spark in their hearts and minds. Our ethos is underpinned by the key values represented in the school crest: Confidence; Kindness; Growth and Courage. The high level of individual care and attention extended to every child is supported by small class sizes, an excellent staff/pupil ratio, specialist teaching staff and strong emphasis on wellbeing. Our nurturing yet focused environment develops children who are critical thinkers, self-directed and willing to seize opportunities.
Terrington’s broad curriculum and excellent facilities are supplemented by an exceptional range of co-curricular activities and events. From Year 3 upwards, the last hour of the school day is devoted to a varied and regularly-changing programme of enrichment sessions. Our TALL Programme helps children acquire a depth of skills and experience outside their academic work, from critical thinking to teamwork and other life-skills. The ad astra Programme stretches and challenges pupils with a wide range of intellectual challenges. Collaborative leadership skills are prized across the school, along with a clear sense of service and empathy. We aim to develop children who have an awareness of their social and environmental responsibility to the world around them.
As truly independent school with no ties to any other, we place special emphasis on preparing each child for entry into the senior school best suited to them, whether locally or further afield. Pupils regularly win scholarships for academia, art, sport, drama and all-round excellence.
The school has a strong boarding community, with over 90% of Year 3–8 pupils opting to stay for weekly or flexi boarding during the school year to make the most of the exciting evening activity programme.
Our excellent sporting facilities include eight acres of playing fields, AstroTurf pitches, tennis courts, an indoor heated swimming pool and sports hall. All major sports are played and an extensive fixture list ensures that every child has ample opportunity to represent the school. Specialist peripatetic tuition is available in Tennis, Cricket and Swimming (either 1:1 or small group sessions) throughout the year. All children have the opportunity to join residential adventure trips in the UK and beyond.
Teaching facilities are modern and well-equipped. Music, art and drama are an integral part of the curriculum, and individual tuition is available for most instruments, voice and drama. Children prepare for concerts, external festivals and exams. The Junior and Senior choirs perform within school and at local venues, and our instrumental ensembles run during enrichment throughout the year. All children have the opportunity to perform in termly recitals held in our Music Centre, as well as our more large-scale concerts and services.
The Headmaster, Huw Thomas, and his wife Becca live in the school grounds. Parents are also fully involved in the life of the school. There is a flourishing ‘Friends of Terrington Hall’ parents’ social committee.
Bursaries are available on a means-tested basis. Discounts are available for siblings, as well as the children of Old Terringtonians, members of the clergy and Armed Forces personnel.
