Wellington Prep School opened in September 1999 in purpose-built accommodation to provide one of the most stimulating educational environments for children anywhere in the country.
Wellington Prep School provides an education of unrivalled quality which both complements and enhances the national reputation of Wellington School and enables us to deliver educational excellence from nursery level through to university entrance. Our school is a place of endeavour, teamwork, integrity and laughter; a place where each child is nurtured.
You wish to see your child grow in confidence, fulfilment and character. And, of course, you want your child to be happy.
Here at Wellington Prep we don’t rely on our staff to be knowledge organisers – but we do organise knowledge. Carefully. Thoughtfully. Intentionally. We define what matters in each subject, both in and out of the classroom, and then we build bridges between those ideas. By the time the children transition to the Senior School, they haven’t just completed a curriculum – they’ve lived it. They’ve explored it with a guide who knows every twist and turn, every character arc, every plotline.
And the result? The children leave the Prep School not just with knowledge, but with understanding. Not just with facts, but with insight. They leave ready to take on the next chapter of their story – confident, curious and connected.
This is what makes education so exciting, in that there is no single, predictable future. There are endless potential futures waiting to be created. And young people have never in history had so much opportunity to shape them. Wellington Prep is uniquely positioned to support this journey. We offer both historical stability and fresh perspectives; academic excellence combined with progressive practices and a community as inspiring as it is welcoming. Wellington Prep represents the strength of tradition, the confidence to evolve and the humility to respect each new challenge. Once you’ve seen it for yourself, you’ll believe what we believe; that it’s not the future that’s coming for our children, it’s our children who are coming for the future.
We value education in its widest sense; making the most of today in order that we can make even more of tomorrow and the days, weeks, months and years that lie ahead. This is ‘Learning for Life’. Our education is unbounded, as we encourage our children to be curious, to be creative and to be compassionate. At WPS, learning is not a spectator sport.
We believe that every child deserves to be inspired every day. The qualities our children will need in life are as important as their skills. This is why we have high expectations for each child, why we nurture and support each child and develop each child’s leadership skills. We encourage our children to think independently and to ‘have a go’, secure in the knowledge that they can learn from mistakes.
While the headline ratio of one fully qualified and experienced teacher for every ten children in the Prep School is striking, it is the quality of these relationships that really matters and this cannot be gauged by a simple statistic. The range of experiences our teaching team provide for our children is superb. Every person cares deeply about the children in their care and each child’s happiness and fulfilment.
Our children benefit from sharing some facilities with our Senior School, giving them access to:
18 purpose-designed, modern classrooms
a large, attractive, central school hall, the hub of our school
the most modern and up-to-date education resources
purpose-built ICT suite and library
spacious grounds including a large playground with wooden amphitheatre
our forest school in the Blackdown Hills
the Princess Royal Sports Complex
numerous sports pitches, hard courts and the Astro
music and drama resources across the whole school 3–18
dedicated performance space
an indoor swimming pool.
