Hymers College is a leading co-educational day school for pupils aged 3–18, offering the very best in academic excellence, pastoral care, co-curricular opportunities and facilities.
Founded in 1893 by Reverend John Hymers, the College was established ‘for the training of intelligence in whatever social rank of life it may be found’. Originally a boys’ school, it has been proudly co-educational for over 35 years, now welcoming pupils from Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
Number of pupils. 915 in total – 84 in the Infant School (Pre-School–Year 2), 158 in the Junior School (Years 3–6), 520 in the Senior School (Years 7–11) and 153 in the Sixth Form.
Admission is usually at Pre-School, Reception, Year 3, Year 7 or Year 12. Places may also be available in other year groups.
For applications from Year 3, pupils must sit an entrance assessment. Once a child has joined the school, progression is seamless, with no assessment to move from Infant School to Junior School, or from the Junior School to the Senior School.
Almost all pupils qualify for the Sixth Form through GCSE results. Pupils from other schools are admitted to the Sixth Form on the basis of strong GCSE results and an interview with the Headmaster.
Pupils are prepared for GCSEs through a broad curriculum including Music, Business-related subjects, Computer Science, Technology and the Arts.
The school offers a broad range of A level subjects and excellent careers and university guidance, including bespoke programmes for STEM, Creative, Humanities, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary, and Sport.
Facilities. Based on a beautiful 45-acre campus in Hull, the school offers a range of dedicated facilities to children to explore, play, discover and grow. These include specialist laboratories, a 200-seater theatre, and Art and Design Technology Centre. There is a specialist Music School providing an including a recital hall, rehearsal and music technology rooms, and a recording studio. The Learning Resources Centre houses a café, library, study areas and break-out rooms.
In recent years the school has refurbished many Science laboratories as well as the Sixth Form Common Room and Junior School, as they welcome Pre-School to Year 2 on the main campus for the first time.
All Senior School pupils are issued with a Chromebook and there are class sets of digital devices to enhance the learning of younger pupils.
The grounds include a recently upgraded all-weather Astropitch, tennis and netball courts, rugby and cricket pitches, a swimming pool and a gym.
Co-curricular activities. Hymers College offers over 100 co-curricular clubs and activities, from water polo to chess, debating to British Sign Language. Pupils are strongly encouraged to participate, with a longer lunch break allowing adequate time for pupils to do this.
The main school games are rugby, cricket, hockey, football, netball, tennis and athletics. The school regularly competes at national level and provides members of county and national teams.
Many pupils take part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme at Bronze, Silver and Gold level.
Drama is particularly strong, with several productions a year, and Music is a major school activity, from full orchestras to choir and chamber groups in each part of the school. Individual tuition is available in most instruments.
