Brooke Priory is a day Preparatory School for boys and girls aged 2–11 in Oakham, Rutland. The school was founded in 1989 and moved into its own purpose-built building in February 1995. Since then it has doubled its classroom provision, established a Nursery, state-of-the-art Resources Centre, Theatre, Art & DT Studio, individual Music Practice Rooms, Sports Hall and Astroturf.
Aims and values. The school’s aims include ‘positive relationships’; the teachers know the children as individuals and develop a level of trust which allows children to flourish in a safe, inspiring environment. Outstanding teaching, with bespoke levels of challenge for all children, ensures every child reaches their potential.
Brooke Priory School holds the importance of each pupil’s individuality at the heart of all it does. The School aims to foster, through the curriculum and all learning and social interactions, the school values of Friendliness and Happiness, Confidence, Respectfulness, Hard Work and Resilience, Honesty, and Teamwork in equal measure.
Academic. Brooke Priory provides a stimulating, caring environment in which children are encouraged to attain their highest potential. Class sizes average 15, and children are grouped according to ability in Mathematics and English (reading and spelling).
In recent years, the school has enjoyed 100% pass rate at 11+ to senior independent schools and local select-entry grammar schools. Some children are offered scholarships to independent schools each year including academic, music and sport. In 2024, an 11+ Academic Scholarship to Oakham School was awarded. Children progress to a variety of senior schools, including Oakham School, Uppingham School, Stamford Endowed Schools, and Oundle School, as confident and independent learners.
The curriculum is enriched with a variety of trips, visits and residential trips for Forms III–VI which support learning in the classroom.
Enrichment. The school delivers a broad and varied curriculum, where every child will participate in Art, Drama, French and Music. 50 children from Form II onwards currently enjoy individual music lessons and are encouraged to join one of the Choirs and Ensembles. The Music department hosts regular informal concerts after school to enable pupils to practise their performances in front of an audience.
Sport is an important part of the curriculum. Children from Kindergarten upwards swim weekly for two terms per year and are taught in a wide variety of games by specialist staff. The main sports are football, rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis, athletics and swimming.
The school offers a wide choice of extracurricular activities. Before- and after-school care are available and holiday clubs are enjoyed by many children. Many holiday courses specialise in sport, dance/drama and music.
Welly Days. The original Brooke Priory, which is situated just one mile outside Oakham, is set in 22 acres of beautiful Rutland countryside and everyone, from the Nursery to Form VI, visits regularly for Welly Days. Welly Days are a highlight at Brooke Priory School, where the children take a step back from the classroom and immerse themselves in the great outdoors. Set in the beautiful original grounds of our school, Welly Days offer a unique opportunity for children to engage in activities that nurture creativity, independence, and a love for nature – things that can’t be replicated within the walls of a traditional classroom.
