Set in inspirational grounds high in the Surrey Hills, surrounded by forest land, Duke of Kent School provides an excellent co-educational option for pupils from 3 to 16 years. Coming from Guildford, Horsham, Dorking and surrounding local villages, many pupils use the School minibus service.
Extended day arrangements for those pupils who wish to arrive before or stay beyond the end of lessons (7.30 am to 7.30 pm) provide families with exceptional flexibility. At the end of the School day, pupils can choose to complete their homework at School under supervision or at home, and can also choose from a varied programme of sport, academic and social activities.
The small size of the School enables us to know our pupils very well and to ensure that all pupils can reach their potential. All pupils receive the appropriate combination of academic challenge and support to enable them to achieve. A Duke of Kent School pupil is expected to contribute and participate to the very best of their ability, take an active role in community life and take responsibility for their learning. Our able and committed teaching and support staff work in partnership with pupils and their families. The expectation is that each pupil will strive to achieve a string of ‘personal bests’: in the classroom, on the sports field, in personal development, in exploring the arts and in a wide range of activities. We focus on each child's attitude to learning in order to ensure that they are fully equipped to make maximum progress. Teaching and learning is supported by a well-established 1-1 iPad and Chromebook programme, with all pupils encouraged to learn to touch type.
Pupils are prepared for GCSE/IGCSE examinations in the context of a curriculum which aims to take pupils above and beyond exam preparation. There is a focus throughout the School of encouraging pupils to adopt a growth mindset in order to become successful learners. Building on the work of our Prep School in which Creative Curriculum provides excellent stretch and challenge for pupils, our rigorous GCSE programme prepares pupils for A level and university study and sparks what may be lifelong intellectual passions. Learning beyond the classroom, whether on educational visits or through outdoor learning on site, is a crucial aspect of our pupils' experience. Personal development receives close attention. Our pupils develop confidence and self-esteem from opportunities to lead and to serve. Kindness is expected and encouraged from pupils of all ages.
The School maintains a busy fixtures calendar at all ages. We have extensive playing fields, an all-weather Astroturf, all-weather tennis courts, a swimming pool and a full-sized sports hall. More than half of our pupils are learning a musical instrument. Music and Drama activities take place in a purpose-built Performing Arts Hall with facilities for Music Technology. The quality of Art on display and in production is a particular strength of the School.
In 2023, our Year 11 cohort achieved an overall pass rate of 98% with a commendable 92% of our pupils gaining at least one grade 7. In recent years our pupils have gone on to successful courses of further study at day schools, boarding schools and colleges, both locally and further afield.
Prospective pupils are invited to attend a visit day during which they will be interviewed by the Head or another senior member of staff, and will take a range of cognitive tests (CAT4). No preparation is required for our admissions testing. We are looking for evidence of enthusiasm and willingness to get fully involved in our lively community.
