Scholarships and bursaries – further details
We offer a limited number of scholarships each year for pupils entering Year 7, 9 and Sixth Form (Year 12) to recognise and reward outstanding achievement and potential in a range of areas that are important to the school. In return, we expect our scholars to:
Have a strong work ethic
Take a leading role in all aspects of their scholarship subject
Contribute positively to school life and our local community
Act as role models, setting a good example to those around them.
There is an expectation that scholars will normally take their discipline at GCSE and/or A level (depending on their entry point into the school).
The value of the award is determined by the Headmaster and scholarships are reviewed annually against criteria such as talent, effort and progress.
The Nightingale Scholars’ Society
The Society meets regularly and follows a programme of talks by experts on a variety of topics. Scholars are expected to attend small group tutorials with scholar mentors and complete mini projects each term, building a portfolio of work throughout their time with us. The depth and expectation of these projects will increase as our scholars progress through the school.
Applying for a scholarship
To support all scholarship applications, each applicant should complete and return a scholarship application form. Applications must also:
Include a brief personal statement, written by the candidate, to explain why he/she should be considered for the scholarship
Provide any certificates/evidence of achievement to support the application
Scholarship assessments take place in the January before September entry.
Academic scholarship applicants will be invited to an interview with a member of the school’s Senior Leadership Team. Candidates applying for Art & Design, Drama, Music and Sport scholarships will be invited to attend an assessment led by our Heads of Department. All candidates will receive a briefing about what to prepare and what to expect at the assessment ahead of time.
Honorary scholarships recognise a pupil’s potential and commitment to a discipline but without a financial benefit. Pupils are encouraged to take part in the scholarship programme and benefit from its opportunities to develop their talent. Honorary scholars are either identified during the scholarship application process or during their time at Embley. They are often invited to apply for full scholarships at the next available application window.
Academic
Our Academic scholars show high academic attainment across the curriculum and contribute to the intellectual life of the school.
Art & Design
Art & Design scholars demonstrate skill and ability in a range of artistic areas or demonstrate a creative ability within design and show how they experiment and explore their creative ideas.
Drama
Drama scholarships are awarded to talented performers who are committed to playing a leading role in all aspects of drama and performing arts at school and within the community.
Music
Our Music scholars have a natural flair for performing and/or composing and they will take a leading role in musical performances at school.
Sport
Our Sport scholars display significant talent in their chosen sport. They should already be representing their chosen sport or activity at county level or be capable of achieving a similar standard.
