The King Alfred School is unique among independent schools in North London. Apart from being all-age (4–18), co-ed and secular, it takes in a range of ability as opposed to its academically selective neighbours in the private sector.
The school’s beginnings stand out: it was founded in 1898 by a group of Hampstead parents who wanted to provide an education that focused on the whole child, on the development of character and individuality. Visitors tend to comment on the ‘village’ layout, leafy green site and the friendly atmosphere – this is a no-uniform establishment where all are on first-name terms and students are supported to thrive at school and beyond.
Academic results are consistently impressive, and most of the KAS Sixth Form go on to universities in the UK and abroad, with others going on to art foundation courses, music colleges, performing arts institutions or straight into employment. The school prides itself on delivering an excellent child-centred education built around enjoyment of school, academic success within a non-pressured environment, student wellbeing and equipping young people with the skills needed to succeed in a fast-moving world.
Bursaries for Year 7 and the Sixth Form are available.
Charitable status. The King Alfred School Society is a Registered Charity, number 312590.
