Set within the historic conservation area of Fulham Palace, Burlington House School is a specialist school for secondary-age SpLD pupils. Mainstream in structure and specialist in nature, Burlington House caters successfully for the needs of pupils with specific learning difficulties. Alongside the curriculum, the school also offers expertise in speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and a school counsellor.
Burlington House Sixth Form was established in September 2020, providing pupils post-16 from Burlington House (previously The Moat School) and other schools a chance to take A Level and BTEC options. It also offers a full range of GCSE re-sit options as well as therapeutic benefits for KS5 pupils with SpLDs and others with additional needs.
Burlington House Prep was established in September 2022, providing a space for prep-aged pupils to work with expert staff from an early age. The Prep facilities at Burlington House were shortlisted for 'Prep School of the Year' at the 2023 TES awards.
All teachers complete a postgraduate BDA-approved course in teaching students with SpLD within their first 2 years of appointment. Qualified Learning Support Assistants accompany pupils throughout their lessons at Key Stage 3, where class sizes are a maximum of 10. Class sizes are even smaller at Key Stage 4.
Multi-sensory teaching is combined with advanced IT provision, each pupil being provided with a laptop computer for use in school and at home. Touch-typing is taught in Year 7 and there is a state-of-the-art wireless network which enables staff and pupils to access the school intranet with its wide range of learning resources and data, as well as the internet.
At Key Stage 3, pupils follow a mainstream curriculum (with the exception of foreign languages) before selecting their GCSE options alongside the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Single or Dual Award Science. Burlington House offers excellent facilities for learning, with a suite of Design Technology workshops offering state-of-the-art facilities for Food Technology, Resistant Materials and Graphics. Art, Music, Drama, ICT and Business Studies each have dedicated studios or specialist classrooms.
Burlington House has an extensive enrichment programme of extracurricular activities designed to widen experience and develop self-confidence. In Drama, all Year 9 pupils take part in an annual Shakespeare play and there are several productions and workshop performances each year. Burlington House’s proximity to the River Thames enables pupils to experience rowing as a sport, swimming is popular and 2012 saw the introduction of Martial Arts and boxing. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award encourages pupils to test their own limits and since 2020 we have also offered the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award with a full set of dedicated DofE accredited staff across both the school and Sixth Form.
Burlington House School is part of the Cavendish Education Group.
