Founded in 1927, Pembroke House School is a unique British curriculum boarding school, which has been welcoming children for nearly 100 years and today educates around 200 children from 28 nationalities.
Location. We are set on a glorious campus of 140 acres in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, Kenya. Sitting at an elevation of 2,000 m, the climate offers year-round sunshine, affording everyday opportunities for an outdoor education. While being situated rurally, Pembroke House School is still within easy reach of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Curriculum. Pembroke House School follows the British Curriculum and term dates. It offers an all-round education where pupils are encouraged to do their best while studying a range of subjects. Subjects include: Adventure Learning, Art, Digital learning, Drama, English, French, Geography, History, Kenyan History, Kiswahili, Latin, Maths, Music, PSHE, Science, Sports & PE, STEAM and TPR. Small class sizes with a maximum of 14 students and a pupil/teacher ratio of 1:6 enable tailored learning experiences and strong outcomes.
Games. The main sports are Cricket, Hockey, Rugby and Netball; Tennis, Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country, Squash, Golf, Horse Riding and Football are on offer as well. A full range of clubs and various extras are offered, including individual music instruction, LAMDA, MotoX, Street Dance, Taekwondo, Mountain Biking, Horse Riding, Golf and Chess. Drama is also strong with several productions put on each year.
The extracurriculur programme that Pembroke House Schools offers has a vibrant and varied weekend programme to support the full boarding ethos of the school. This involves camping, going on safari and other adventurous outdoor pursuits that strengthen team-building and develop leadership skills.
Boarding. Pembroke has two boarding houses, Scholes House for girls and Mackie House for boys. Both Houses benefit from a team of dedicated and experienced staff, including a live-in Housemistress or Master, a second live-in House Parent, plus two House Parents who live in adjacent staff housing. They are supported by a team of House Tutors, who provide additional pastoral care. We are a traditional, full boarding prep school, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during term time. We offer fully flexible, responsive boarding which allows pupils and families to choose when and how often to board.
Every child has their own bed in one of the boarding houses and there is storage for their possessions so everyone has their own familiar space, filled with their personal things and special pictures. There is complete flexibility surrounding the boarding, which enables us to tailor our boarding provision to each individual child and respond to the varying circumstances of different families. It also gives children the chance to experience all the joys of boarding life at their own pace.
Medical & San. Our health centre is attached to our boarding house. There are always at least two fully qualified nurses on duty, including overnight. The nurses hold several clinics a day, where they deal with any illness or injuries and dispense any regular medication. Nurses also always attend home matches so that they can respond promptly to sporting injuries. For children travelling to away matches or on school trips, buses are equipped with an appropriate medical kit which includes any specific medication required by individual children.
Every week, the school is visited by our school doctor so that more significant illness or injury can be monitored, reviewed and treated appropriately. There are four girls’ beds and four boys’ beds in the San so that those who feel particularly ill can be admitted and closely monitored. If a child’s illness becomes more serious or they require emergency medical care, they will be referred to hospital immediately. We also facilitate access to visiting specialists, such as the optometrist, podiatrist, physiotherapist, dentist and counsellor.
Pembroke House has a reputation for producing outstanding pupils who are full of character, integrity and grit. Every year, Pembrokians achieve great scholarship success, both in academics and music or sporting awards.
