The Prep School at Ryde, is an independent Coeducational Nursery, Pre-Prep & Prep, providing an ambitious, happy and supportive environment, one in which children thrive and develop a lifelong love of learning. Children aged 2–11 years benefit from a varied and relevant programme of study, supplemented by enriching extracurricular activities, as we seek to prepare our pupils for an exciting future in an ever-changing world.
Westhill Nursery, is a beautifully restored Victorian villa in the grounds of Ryde School, run by a fully qualified team in a nurturing social environment that operates a family-friendly provision, 8.00 am - 6.00 pm, 47 weeks a year. Fiveways, in its own separate building, is home to the Pre-Prep, whilst Prep sits on the main school site. Through creative and imaginative teaching in purpose-built classrooms, a sound foundation of key skills is established from Nursery to Year 6. Pupils receive the support of a well-qualified and dedicated staff, enjoying a full range of specialist facilities including a continually upgraded IT facility, with internet access across the school, the new HIVE creative centre, including the Lego studio, Science Laboratory, Music room and Theatre.
A broad, balanced and rich curriculum is followed. Pupils have the unique opportunity to study and develop a love of languages from an early age. As the original host school for the Isle of Wight Literary Festival Schools’ programme, our children benefit from the thrill of visiting authors, poets and script writers. Pupils are encouraged to develop their full range of talents. In Music they are able to compose and perform, with all Pupils in Year 4 learning an instrument for free. Many pupils undertake individual instrumental lessons. There are choirs, music groups and an orchestra. As well as weekly classroom drama lessons, we enter children into LAMDA examinations and they take part in shows and festivals across the Island. Art and Design Technology are taught as discrete subjects and clubs, competitions and exhibitions also allow the children to develop their talents. Sports teams start at U8 level and we compete successfully against Island and mainland prep schools in netball, hockey, rugby, football, athletics (indoor and outdoor), cricket, rounders and cross country. Every child has the opportunity to sail by the end of Year 6 and swimming and tennis also make up part of our extensive sports programme. Our new outdoor education programme and outdoor classroom provides an inspirational environment for the children to learn, grow and develop. There is a full and wide-ranging programme of clubs and activities (which changes each term) during lunchtime and after school, offering something for everyone.
The Senior School is on the same campus, enabling Prep School pupils to benefit from the use of the Sports Hall and pitches. Careful liaison between the staff and induction days in the Summer Term ensure a smooth transition for pupils to the Senior School (see entry in the HMC section for Ryde School with Upper Chine). Charitable status. Ryde School with Upper Chine is a Registered Charity, number 307409. The aims and objectives of the Charity are the education of boys and girls.
