St Peter’s 8–13 (formerly St Olave’s) was founded in 1876. With its own halls, music school, practical subjects’ workshops, sports hall and specialist teaching rooms, St Peter’s enjoys some of the best facilities for a prep school of its type and is proud to be the Choir School for York Minster.
The school puts pastoral care of the individual as its highest priority, and mental wellbeing is promoted through mindfulness sessions and a Wellbeing Hub staffed with councellors. There is a demanding, wide curriculum from the earliest age with specialist subject areas – modern foreign languages, information technology, science and music, amongst others – being taught by specialist teachers from Year 4. Progress is monitored through a regular system of effort grades, and attainment is measured through internal and externally moderated tests.
Boarding, available for children in Year 7 and above, is a flourishing aspect of the school, with Boarding Houses under the constant care of resident Houseparents and their own family. Weekly and flexi boarding are also available. There are also five Day Houses.
Music plays an important part in the life of the school with dedicated music teachers, two orchestras, a wind band and multiple ensembles playing and practising weekly. Over 200 pupils learn individual instruments, and all are encouraged to join larger groups. York Minster's girl and boy choristers are educated at St Peter's 8–13 and receive a substantial reduction in tuition fees.
Sport has an equally high profile, where football, hockey, cricket, netball, rugby, tennis and swimming are major sports. Athletics, cross-country running, squash, badminton, basketball and volleyball are also available for all. The school has 23 tennis courts, a synthetic pitch and a 25-metre, 6-lane swimming pool.
Drama is thriving with regular performances, and out-of-school activities flourish through clubs such as eco club, science society, chess, photography, art and trampolining.
The vast majority of boys and girls move on to St Peter's 13–18.
Applications need to be received by 31 December, and entrance assessments are held in January/February each year. Assessments can also be arranged at other times. Entry is recommended in Year 4 (with priority given to York Minster Choristers), Year 5 and Year 7, but entry into other year groups may be possible, although they are often oversubscribed. Please contact the Admissions Team on admissions@stpetersyork.org.uk before applying. Means-tested fee assistance is available from age 11.
Charitable status. St Peter’s School, York, is a Registered Charity, number 1141329. It exists to provide education for boys and girls.
