Founded in 1868 by the Sisters of Mercy, it has been furnishing children with precious opportunities, experiences and memories for over 155 years. What lies at the heart of pupils’ achievements is their happiness and enthusiasm for learning. This is nurtured by dedicated staff who provide a secure environment and curriculum designed to stimulate on all levels of development: spiritual, emotional, physical and academic.
The National Curriculum provides the basis for our programmes of study. This is enhanced and enriched to reflect the interests of our pupils. We have specialist teachers to deliver PE, French, Art, Music, Gymnastics and Dance. We have a school librarian who oversees the well-stocked library and all pupils have the opportunity to attend a library session once a week.
Children of other religions and Christian denominations are very welcome at St. Winefride’s and share in the Religious Ethos of the School, which is summed up in our motto, ‘Soli Deo’. Arising from the Christian values of the school is an awareness of the plight of others around the world, for whom the school raises money through a number of fundraising events.
Our aim is to ensure that the needs of our children are met in all areas of school life and that each child is given a wealth of experience and opportunities. By working collaboratively in a caring and compassionate environment, the children will be supported to reach their full academic, social and personal potential. This, in turn, will guarantee they leave St. Winefride’s as confident, responsible and resilient members of society, ready to tackle whatever comes their way.
Our pupils have always achieved well academically and St. Winefride’s was number 28 in the Sunday Times Top Independent Prep Schools 2021. We are proud to be the only Shropshire school to have been included in the top 50 national list.
